RED FLAG WARNING!

The goal of this command is love, which comes from a pure heart and a clear conscience and genuine faith. 1Timothy 1:5

One of the most egregious battlegrounds in this era of Covid and quarantine, unrest and riot, is the creeping tendency toward coercion of conscience from myriad corners of society. This is core to much of the inner conflict and unrest we’ve experienced in recent months.

Conscience is a gift from God. A good conscience acts as a red flag warning to distinguish rightly between good and evil, honorable and dishonorable, contemptible and clean. Without clear conscience, we cannot have a pure and uncorrupted heart. We cannot live in authentic faith and right alignment with God. We cannot be free.

As 1 Corinthians 8:4-12 says, anyone who compels you to do something against your conscience sins not only against you but against Christ.

When the apostles were forbidden from preaching Christ, they returned immediately to the temple courts to preach the good news of the gospel. When called to account for their non-compliance, Peter and the others stood firm.

We must obey God rather than men. Acts 5:29

When the laws of men are at odds with the law of God that He has inscribed on your heart, your conscience will raise a red flag warning.

Neither love nor law of God permits coercion of conscience. Coercion is a crime against humanity that creates oppression. As children of God, we must rightly discern any spirit that attempt to corrupt identity, authority and right relationship with Him. Our destiny depends on it!

Like bending a tuning fork to the will of another, coercion will destroy the pure tone and purpose for which you were designed. That is why God never coerces us in anything.

Where have you experienced coercion of conscience?

What has God been speaking to your heart about this matter?

In what ways do you see the role of conscience in your relationship with God?

Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.
2 Corinthians 3:17
Conscience is the most sacred of all property.
There is no title (or right) to invade a man’s conscience,
which is more sacred than his castle.
