Night Calls

“For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received a spirit of sonship and by him we cry “Abba, Father!” Romans 8:15

Some nights ago, I had an experience that was not a dream so much as an impartation of sonship and belonging in Christ. Each time I moved toward awakening, I felt a fresh outpouring of God’s fathering love wash over me, His daughter. This sense of being His true child was so real in its tenderness, so absolute in its capacity to cover, protect and cherish, that I knew in the core of my being, I belong to Him. This was not an analogy of belonging as in, “You are like a daughter to me”— but a completely new reality—“You are my daughter.” Never before have I experienced such an intense sense of personal identity.

Here I saw that the love of my earthly parents was a mere shadow of the spiritual reality of my Abba Father’s unfathomable love for me. His love is so far beyond any we can know in our earthly being.

This experience of deep belonging in my Father’s love and lineage was so absolute that I realized with certainty, “No one can snatch me out of His hand. Nothing can separate me from His love. Absolutely nothing. I am utterly safe. Wholly provided for. I belong to Him.”

When I awoke, this sweet sense of belonging was still with me.

The following night I had a similar experience. Each time I began to awaken, I was overcome with a wave of this belovedness in Christ, the Father’s tenderness toward me. His comfort and care were exquisitely real. His love was a great ocean all around me, in which I was buoyant, full and free.

These encounters made real a dimension of true identity and intimacy in Christ that had until then been just beyond my reach.

Do you also struggle to grasp your full identity as the beloved of God?

Ask the Father to reveal the depth of His love and the place of belonging and belovedness you hold in His heart. For when you experience how firmly He enfolds you in this perfect love, you will never be a slave to fear again.
