Father, I Want Them With Me!
The promises of God belong to us as our Present-Future reality—His Now and Later purposes to be fully realized in eternity, but also to be an active part of our present experience as children of God. We do not have to wait for heaven to see the manifest power and presence of Jesus made real in our lives. In fact, the Father urges us to move with the Lamb, and learn to live from the place where He is.
Talking with his disciples during his final days, Jesus says in John 14, “Trust in God; trust also in me. In my Father’s house are many rooms; if it were not so I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.”
Some have understood this place to be a sort of mansion in the sky, a heavenly dwelling place awaiting those who die in Christ. But is it possible that Jesus is talking about a present “place” of abiding? A dwelling such as the one He speaks of in John 15? Abide in me, and I will abide in you…apart from me you can do nothing. Or John 14:23 when He declares of those who love and obey God; My Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him. Consider John 12:26 in light of this promise: Where I am, my servant also will be.
Here is the point. Our position as the redeemed of the Lord gives us a spiritual place from which we live, serve, abide and abound. It invites us to see as Jesus sees, to do as He does, to be with Him. The Holy Spirit is a placeholder for us in “His Kingdom come” where we may abide in Christ and become like him. While the perfection of that likeness may not be manifest on this side of eternity, it is nevertheless to be our reality as we live here on earth.
As the psalmist says – One thing I ask of the Lord, this is what I seek: That I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, safe in his dwelling and high upon his rock.
Jesus answers this longing of our hearts with his own desire and declaration of his will be done – Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am and to see my glory, the glory you have given me.
Have you seen His glory? Are you embracing the place Jesus has prepared for you? Are you learning to inhabit the present reality of your dwelling place in Christ?
